The series Yin Yang was born in part from personally wishing to see ideas and issues from multiple perspectives. That complex desire led me to the simplified symbolic device of looking at and photographing a scene from180 degree opposite points of view. This results in a series of photographs that are united by a conceptual methodology rather than a common subject.
First I have to abandon the traditional approach of seeking the single strongest composition and instead find two compositions that conjoin in a meaningful way. I then shoot these pairs contiguously in camera and print them as they were shot. This challenges me to be precise in the moment, and to be decisive in my final combinations. In an era of option anxiety, this keeps things simple later on.
