The Flowers of Insomnia 1989 – present
As a lifelong insomniac, I began this series as a way to make the best of underutilized hours spent awake. Now late night is often my only unbooked time, and an opportunity to quiet my mind. The use of flowers and fauna as a jumping off point began from inspiration by my father’s 1950s amateur photography. Images are multiple exposed on film in camera to overcome the limitations of the single frame, and to create new hybrid landscapes. They are then printed as shot with no manipulation. Being able to combine scenes separated by ten yards, ten miles, or even different cities and states allows me to juxtapose somewhat like a cinematographer or film editor.
